Problems that clients face with this type of injury and what the law says.
Injuries to the hands can be seriously debilitating, even if the impact from the injury is short lived. The loss of capacity to a new mother who relies upon her hands for the day to day care of her baby, or on a man who has used his hands to work all his life can be devastating.
Awards for these injuries concentrate upon the loss of use of the hand to the person. A higher award will often be made where the hands are rendered completely useless as opposed to when they can still be partly used.
The amputation of the hand is perhaps the highest type of award in this category. In considering the impact of the complete loss of the hand, the court will consider whether prosthetics can be used effectively.
